What Surprised Me About Sintra
The surprise in Sintra is that the costly mistakes are small and logistical: the wrong slot, the wrong order of stops, the wrong assumption about getting to the coast.

Before booking, confirm three things: that you have a Pena slot or a tour that includes one, that your coastal stops are reachable in daylight, and that your chosen format matches the pace you want.
The first mistake to avoid is booking transport before the palace. Advance booking for Pena is mandatory in peak season, so a train ticket without a slot is money spent on a view of the gate.
The second is treating Cabo da Roca as a quick hop. My minibus day taught me that the coast is where public connections cost you the light, so that is the one leg where I would pay for a guided tour.
