Packing Lessons I Learned the Hard Way
Two things matter more than anything else in a Rome day bag: shoes with real soles and an empty water bottle. The historic centre is compact but hard on feet, and the city's public fountains mean you never need to buy bottled water.
On that first September walk through the Centro Storico, sampietrini cobbles rolled under my soles all day. By evening my feet knew every stone. My advice now is to walk the centre in stages, in proper shoes, and to leave wheeled luggage at the hotel.
