Why Lisbon Nearly Won Me Over
I learned Lisbon through my calves in the autumn of twenty twenty-one, walking Alfama and Graça. The calçada underfoot had been polished glassy by a century of shoes, treacherous after drizzle, and every alley in Alfama ended in either laundry or a view. A tram groaned past close enough to touch.

Same city, same morning, two different moods waiting at two stations.
That morning explains why Lisbon nearly took the whole comparison. A London base gives you one Stonehenge day, shaped by a ticket slot. A Lisbon base gives you a choice of mood. I like a city that lets me decide over breakfast what kind of day I want, and Lisbon does that.

What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Three checks would have saved me each of my bad days in these two places: the last admission time, the payment method at the station, and the grip on my shoes.
Check the last admission time before you leave, especially on Sundays. The chain-link fence in Salisbury is my permanent reminder that a site can be in plain sight and still closed to you. Before you fix your London dates, open the English Heritage page, confirm your slot and its admission rules, and only then book the cab or tour around it.
At Rossio, do not assume a Visa or Mastercard will clear the machine. The woman in the queue behind me knew the rule and I did not.
On Lisbon's hills, the calçada decides your pace. Grippy soles and a route that finishes downhill make the difference between a long walk and a careful shuffle after drizzle.
