I Did Both London and Stonehenge. Here's What Nobody Tells You
If you pick Stonehenge, you lose one full London day, and you lose all of it. According to English Heritage, Stonehenge is 140km west of London (about 2 hours by bus or 1.5 hours by train to Salisbury plus shuttle). Most day trips combine it with Bath or Windsor. So the real question is whether the stones are worth a day you could spend in the city.
My view is that it depends on how many days you have in London and how well you are sleeping. Skip Stonehenge if your London stay is short and you have not yet seen the parts of the city you came for.
Jet lag should shape the order of your days. I flew in from Tokyo and started in London, where English signage made my foggy first days easier and I dozed through a Tube ride without panic. That trip taught me not to schedule anything long and fixed for the first days after a long flight. A Stonehenge day is long and fixed. Put it later in your stay, once your body has caught up with the clock.
Luggage matters as well. I booked the Eurostar early, when fares were lower, and learned at Gare du Nord that check in closes well before departure. My heavy suitcase decided the order: I wanted to finish in London, with my hotel near St Pancras, so I only had to haul it through stations once. I kept a contactless card for London in its own pocket.

Why London Nearly Won Me Over
London almost won because a spare day in the city costs nothing to plan. You can step out of your hotel, pick a museum, cross the river and change your plans at lunch. Check opening times and events on Visit London before you finalise a city day, since exhibition schedules change through the year.

The Experience
A private Cambridge day is a useful trial run for the Stonehenge question. On this trip a local plans the day around what you want to see, so you set the pace.
Book Cambridge instead when colleges, river walks and bookshops appeal to you more than standing stones, or when you want a day away without a heritage ticket to worry about. Skip it if you are only leaving London to see Stonehenge.
The Moment I Made My Decision
What decides it is logistics, not the stones. A Stonehenge day works if everything is booked and timed before you leave London, and it falls apart if you improvise. Combination day trips from London pair Stonehenge with Bath (Roman baths, Georgian architecture) or Windsor Castle. Expect a total trip duration of 10 to 12 hours.
I learned the cost of improvising in Salisbury in August 2016. I stood in an empty parking lot in the late afternoon, looking at the stones through a chain-link fence. The last bus had already gone, and I worked out that the next one would not come for nearly an hour. I had not checked the last admission time, and no amount of enthusiasm fixes that. Check it before you leave London, and check it twice for a Sunday.

Now for the tours I would avoid. Skip any listing that bundles Stonehenge entry as a special queue-jumping extra without saying what it adds to the official timed ticket. What I Wish I'd Known Before I Went
Before booking, check three things: your ticket, your timing and your way home. According to English Heritage, Stonehenge tickets must be booked in advance. Plan around this: time slots sell out two to three weeks ahead in summer. Adult entry is £25 (2025 price). The audio guide is included and worth using.
First, the ticket. If you are going on your own, book the timed slot the day you set your dates, especially for a summer visit. If you are taking a tour, confirm in writing that entry is included and which kind of access it covers.
Second, the timing. Leave London early. That same Salisbury parking lot is the reason I say this: check the last admission time before you commit to a departure time, and plan around the gap between buses if you are travelling independently. Third, the way home. Keep that evening free and eat near your hotel.
