Why Lisbon Nearly Won Me Over

Lisbon nearly won because its second trip costs very little and follows the sea. Cascais is 30km west of Lisbon. The train from Cais do Sodré takes 40 minutes along the coast. The ticket costs approximately €2.30.

That Atlantic matters when you pack. In autumn 2023 I compared an evening at Senhora do Monte with one on Rome's Aventine. In Lisbon the wind off the Atlantic kept the evening cool enough for my jacket, gulls riding it over terracotta roofs. Rome held its heat at dusk in the same season. Leave Cascais off your list if you have only one day and your heart is set on Sintra's palaces.

The Day Trips Below: The Experience

Fátima is 130km north of Lisbon. Rede Expressos buses from Sete Rios take 90 minutes. The sanctuary receives 6 million pilgrims annually, peaking on May 13 and October 13.

The Moment I Made My Decision

London wins this comparison, narrowly, for travellers who want two very different day trips from one base. One guided day links Windsor, Stonehenge, Lacock and Bath, while the other option focuses on Cambridge. Lisbon wins on fares and scenery, but Sintra carries almost all of its case.

The rule I judge by comes from a winter train. In midwinter 2020 I rode from St Pancras to Gare du Nord. I left London under a low grey lid, the station roof full of pigeons and hurry. In Paris the pace on the pavement had changed, and so had the smell: butter instead of rain on wool. High-speed rail makes a same-day London to Paris trip technically possible, but not enjoyable. Since that ride I have held one view: give each city at least two full days of its own, and pick day trips on short, direct lines.

The Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath tour fits that rule differently: it uses a guided coach day to cover Windsor, Stonehenge, Lacock and Bath.
